Time to submit your ‘final drafts’ for our zine and Feast exhibition.
I’m proposing Tenth and Gibson as a space and they have weekend slots available Friday-Sunday on 28-30 October which is the middle weekend of the Feast Festival. We could have an opening from 4-7pm on the Friday night, perhaps with an artists talk in the same time slot on the following day or Sunday. We can have pay-as-you-go bar facilities and catering (perhaps supplemented with some home made contributions?) on both days. Your friends, family, colleagues will be able to see your work on both days and buy our zine/catalogue (maybe $5 covering printing costs?). These are all ideas to ponder and any suggestions especially re printing/hanging and selling art works are most gratefully received. I’ve seen some inspiring SALA exhibitions in the last few weeks! Meanwhile what do we need to pull the zine and exhibition together? Most of you have already sent Jesse your high res images, or texts of poems/prose. They have laid these out as 2 double spread pages per person. At the end of the zine we propose a ‘contributors’ section that will be a thumbnail ’self-representation’ composed of 9-12 separate photos of ‘bits of you’. Then write 50-100 words about your self-representation. Even if you haven’t submitted anything else for the exhibition or zine, we can include these ‘mini-profiles’ at the end of the catalogue and, in the last panel in the exhibition. If you have submitted something for the exhibition and zine you may like to give each piece a title and offer a few sentences of description. In terms of curating the exhibition we’ve workshopped a kind of ‘journey through stories beyond gender’. Section 1: Journey Begins: a brief description of our social media storytelling journey. Some early experiments. Section 2: Transition and Fluidity: self-realisation, exploration, the best things about being trans and gender diverse, short video about IDaHoT Section 3: Conflict, Hurdles, Haters: some of the sad/angry stories, short video on inappropriate questions… Section 4: Allies and Affirmations: works expressing empathy, gratitude Section 5: We Are: exhibitor’s thumbnails and bio/artist’s statements This last stage in the journey opens up into bar space and a projection of the gallery on the ’Stories Beyond Gender’ site. Seats can be arranged here for the artists’ talks. Any more ideas? Please shout out! Our deadlines are shaping up like this: Finals due within 2 weeks, by 2nd Sept Consolidation of text contributions/bios/titles for printing: 2-16 Sep Final layout and planning of zine and exhibition: 16-30 Sept Printing: 30-7 Oct Mounting/Framing - 7-21 Oct Hanging: 28 Oct We’ll likely need support for all of the above stages, so time to roll up your sleeves ; ) Starting with getting your submissions in to us ASAP. That’s return email me or Jesse or upload directly into our google drive here. Look forward to hearing from you soon, Son (on behalf of SBG storytellers)
